Brecon Beacon Bats
Whilst star gazing is undoubtedly the top night time activity in the Brecon Beacons bats are amazing as well.
Species
There are 18 different species of bat in the UK and we have several of them living in the Brecon Beacons. In the Usk Valley we have the UK’s largest population of the rare lesser horseshoe bat.
Pipistrelles
There are 3 species of Pipistrelle bats in the UK and it is these tiny creatures that roost here in Aberyscir. The Common Pipstrelle males roost in the Old Rectory loft. During dusk in the summer months they fly around the house foraging for their food. They may be tiny but you will be amazed at the sound they make. In order to hear this we have a bat detector that you may borrow. Set the device to 45 kHz and sit back and listern. It is mesmerising. you might also hear our other noctunal visitors as well. We have quite a few owls hunting in our valley that sometimes sit in the trees around you.
As you may know they have no intention of flying into you by mistake.
