For 150 years the water powered Talgarth Mill ground corn from the local farmers. In 1946 it turned for the last time and sadly was left to disintegrate until May 2010.
New Life
The 18th century Talgarth Mill which was once the hub of the community would soon disappear if nothing was done. By winning lottery funding in 2010 the 15 month restoration project was made possible.
A new mill wheel was forged by a local blacksmiths. It had to be lifted into place by crane and was extremely heavy. After weeks of labour it was finally attached.
The new wheel is powered by water supplied from the newly restored leat, connected via a sluice gate to the river Ellwye, just 100 metres up stream. The water supply is controlled by the millers as and when they need to mill grain. You can watch this process from the viewing platform.
Fresh Milled Flour
The mill wheel is turning once again milling grain grown just 7 miles away. This is sold via many outlets including The Bakers Table next to the mill. Here you can buy fresh baked bread four days a week or enjoy a meal from local produce in the cafe.
Bakery Courses
You can now attend various baking courses at the Bakers Table. They are small groups and you get to enjoy lunch whilst your bread is rising. At the end of the day you get to take home and enjoy your efforts.
