Black Mountain Ambassador

During 2019 I took part in a training course to become a Mountain & Moorland Ambassador for the Black Mountains.

The Black Mountains

Located in the east of Brecon Beacons National Park, the Black Mountains spreads across parts of Powys, Monmouthshire and Herefordshire. The Black Mountains are a range of hills and mountains that largely lie between the towns of Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye and Craswall and Longtown in Herefordshire. They are the easternmost of the four ranges of  the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The highest mountain in the group is Waun Fach at a height of 811 metres.  Some of the other well known summits are Hay Bluff (Penybegwn), Rhos Dirion, and Lord Hereford’s Knob or ‘Twmpa’ as it is also known by. Towards the south are the summits of Crug Mawr, Pen Allt-Mawr, Table Mountain and Pen Cerrig-calch. To the west, Bal Mawr, Bal Bach, Patrishow Hill and Hatterall Hill. The English side of the range crosses the famous Offa’s Dyke National Trail and includes the summit of The Black Hill (known locally as the Cat’s Back) and the Black Darren. Outlying summits include; the Sugar Loaf (Pen-y-Fal), Blorenge, Mynydd Troed and Mynydd Llangorse.

Becoming a Mountain and Moorland Ambassador

I beecame a Mountain & Moorland Ambassador and joined the Black Mountains Ambassador Network. To become an ambassador I completed the training to help promote and support safe and sustainable visits within the Black Mountains and upland areas.

The area is looked after by the Black Mountains Land Use Partnership  . This is a pioneering cross-border collaborative venture between landowners, graziers, regulatory bodies, community groups and local businesses. Their aim is to promote the restoration and sustainable management of the Black Mountains. It also aims to improve the wellbeing and economy resilience of those who live and work in this iconic area as well as sustainably enhance the visitor experience.
